Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory and gold clergy stole with a tone-on-tone Easter lily vine, Alpha and Omega letters and a radiating cross on each panel, finished in gold beaded fringe.

For Easter services and as a pastor's ordination gift.

Symbolism

The Easter lily is a long-used sign of the resurrection, its white trumpet read as new life out of a bulb that has lain in the ground. Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, name Christ as beginning and end (Revelation 1:8, 22:13), and the radiating cross between them stands for the risen and glorified Christ.

Details

About this stole

This is a pastor's or priest's stole in ivory and gold, its lily vine, Alpha and Omega letters and radiating cross all worked tone on tone in a single gold and tan palette, finished in gold beaded fringe. It can be tailored to your own length.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel carries, from collar to hem, a climbing lily vine with open trumpet blooms, a gold letter, Alpha on the left panel, Omega on the right, a gold cross with lines radiating from it like rays, and a second lily spray near the hem. Unlike stoles that mix several thread colours, this one stays in gold and tan throughout, which gives it a quieter, more restrained look than a fully polychrome design. The Easter lily is a familiar sign of the resurrection, its white trumpet read as new life breaking from a bulb that has lain dormant in the ground. Alpha and Omega, the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, name Christ as "the beginning and the end" (Revelation 22:13), and here they flank a cross whose radiating lines suggest the risen and glorified Christ. A single small gold cross is embroidered at the centre of the back neck flap, and gold beaded fringe finishes both ends.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is the class for Easter, and the lily and Alpha/Omega pairing ties this stole to that season specifically, though the white class more broadly also covers other solemnities. It is not suited to Lent or to Ordinary Time.

03

Who it is for

A pastor or priest leading Easter services will find its restrained tone-on-tone design sits well against festal white altar linens, and its quieter palette also makes it a fitting ordination gift for someone who prefers understated gold work to a fully coloured design.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), end to end over both shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length, which you can change; your confirmed length, height and any notes carry through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

This stole finishes in gold beaded fringe, which needs a little more care than plain bullion fringe. Dry clean only.

  • Store rolled, not folded, to keep the beaded fringe from tangling
  • Keep out of direct sunlight, since the pale ivory ground marks and fades readily
  • Press from the reverse on a low setting, avoiding the raised gold and tan embroidery
  • Handle the fringed ends by the fabric edge, not the beading, so the beads do not catch or pull

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole only for Easter Sunday itself?

No. As a white and gold stole it covers the wider Easter season and other white-class occasions, not Easter Sunday alone. Its lily and Alpha/Omega design does keep it closest to Easter and the resurrection theme generally, rather than to Christmas or other festal white days.

What do the Alpha and Omega letters mean here?

Alpha and Omega are the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet. Scripture uses them as a title for Christ: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end" (Revelation 1:8; 22:13).

On this stole the two letters flank a radiating gold cross, so the three elements together point to the same idea: Christ as the beginning and end of all things.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
