Details

About this habit

This grey habit carries a burgundy scapular and a hood that widens into a rounded shoulder cape rather than sitting flat, with sleeves in a third tone of charcoal - one of the most layered colour treatments among our habits.

01

The cut

A burgundy scapular runs front and back over a grey body, and the hood above it is built as a hood-and-pellegrina combination: it comes to a sharp point at the back but flares outward at the front into a wide, rounded cape that sits over the shoulders like a collar, rather than a plain gusseted hood. Sleeves are charcoal, wide and bell-shaped, distinct from both the grey body and the burgundy scapular. A thick tan rope cincture wraps the waist, knotted at the front with a hanging tasseled end. The scapular's hem sits above the grey tunic hem beneath it. There are no pockets, and the habit pulls on over the head with no front fastening.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is wool, brushed and matte across every panel, with the heavier weight and slower drape typical of wool rather than cotton. Grey, charcoal and burgundy are each solid, unpatterned colours, and the pellegrina collar holds its rounded shape rather than lying flat against the shoulders.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The scapular and hood shape are monastic in cut, and we call it Benedictine in character for that reason, but the wide pellegrina collar and three-tone colour block are a more stylised treatment than the plain habits of that tradition, and the colouring is our own rather than any order's. It suits those who want the added structure of a shoulder cape along with a hood, in a heavier wool built for cooler seasons.

04

Size and fit

We grade to fourteen sizes, each a chest range with a matching robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. The habit pulls on over the head; there is no front fastening.

See the pellegrina collar in detail on the fabric guide, check your fit against the measuring guide, browse the rest of the wool habits in religious habits, or commission a custom vestment with your own colour combination.

06

Care

Wool asks for gentle handling: hand wash in cool water or use a wool cycle, and dry flat rather than on a hanger, which can pull the pellegrina collar out of shape.

Air the habit between wears instead of washing it often.

Use a cool iron with a cloth barrier if the collar needs reshaping.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the pellegrina collar on this hood?

It is a wide, rounded cape that the hood flares into at the front, sitting over the shoulders like a short collar rather than lying flat against the neck. From the back the hood still comes to a normal pointed peak; the pellegrina shape only appears at the front and sides.

How many colours does this habit use?

Three: a grey body, charcoal sleeves and a burgundy scapular, hood and pellegrina collar. It is the most layered colour treatment in our current range of habits.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
