Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Buying as a gift? Give us the wearer's height and we will size it from the chart.

Details

About this stole

This stole carries a single continuous design in deep green: a gold wheat sprig, an ivory grapevine heavy with burgundy-toned grapes, a bound wheat sheaf, and a cross set near the hem, with the embroidery running over the shoulder onto the back.

01

Design and symbolism

Unlike a stole built from separate front and back panels, this one is cut and embroidered as a single green field, and the design follows that continuity: gold and ivory needlework climbs from the hem, over the shoulder seam, and onto the visible back, rather than stopping at the collar. Down the length runs a gold wheat sprig, an ivory grapevine with maple-shaped leaves and clusters of brown and burgundy grapes, and a wheat sheaf bound with a ribbon — the standing pairing of bread and wine. A gold cross, flanked by ivory leaves and a further grape cluster, sits low on the panel near the hem rather than at the collar, so it comes level with the eye of anyone approaching to receive Communion. The ends close in gold beaded fringe.

02

Liturgical use

Green marks Ordinary Time, worn on the Sundays that fall outside Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter and the other named seasons. This stole is built for Communion within that period — it carries no seasonal specificity beyond green itself, and it is not worn during Lent, Advent, Christmastide or Eastertide.

03

Who it is for

A pastor or priest who presides at Communion through the long green Sundays of the year, or as an ordination gift for a minister whose ministry centres on the table.

04

Length and fit

Finished length is 120 in (305 cm) standard, over both shoulders end to end, presbyteral cut, worn straight down. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past 120 in, up to 160 in. Enter a height in the box on this page for a suggested length and adjust it if you wish — the length, height and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

How does this differ from your other green grapevine stole?

The clearest differences are in construction, not colour. On this piece the embroidery is worked as a single continuous design that crosses over the shoulder onto the back panel, the fringe is a gold beaded fringe rather than a bullion tassel, and the gold cross sits low on the panel near the hem rather than being reserved for the back collar.

The other stole keeps its chalice motif at the back neck only and finishes in plain gold fringe.

Why does the embroidery continue onto the back?

The panel is cut and worked as one continuous piece of green fabric rather than a front panel joined to a separate back, so the grapevine and leaf embroidery simply carries on over the shoulder seam instead of stopping at the collar.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
