Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Dark green stole with a subtle tone-on-tone woven diamond pattern, embroidered in the lower third of each panel with a chalice, wheat sheaf and grape cluster. For Communion through Ordinary Time, cut to match our black Passion stole.

Symbolism

The chalice, wheat sheaf and grape cluster grouped together at the hem name the Eucharist directly: bread, wine and the cup that holds them. Kept to the lower third of the panel, the design leaves most of the green cloth plain, in keeping with Ordinary Time's understated character.

Details

About this stole

This priest's or pastor's stole is dark green cloth with a subtle tone-on-tone woven diamond lattice pattern in the weave itself. Each panel carries, low near the hem, a gold chalice above a bundled wheat sheaf and a cluster of purple grapes with a vine leaf.

01

Design and symbolism

The woven diamond pattern is not embroidery but a self-pattern in the fabric, visible mainly at certain angles - the same fabric, cut and gold piping as our black Passion-themed stole in this collection, so the two work as a matched pair for a minister who wants pieces that read as one set across the colours. The embroidered motifs sit only in the lower third of each panel, leaving the rest plain green bordered in gold piping.

Grouped together, the chalice, wheat sheaf and grape cluster name the Eucharist directly - bread, wine and the cup that holds them - rather than spreading the imagery across the full length of the panel.

02

Liturgical use

Green covers Ordinary Time, the long uncounted stretch of Sundays outside Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, and this stole's restrained, lower-panel design suits the understated character of that season well. It is not a stole for Lent or Advent, which call for violet, nor for Easter or Christmas, which call for white and gold.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who wants a modern, quietly patterned stole for Communion through Ordinary Time, especially one who already owns, or plans to own, the matching black stole for Good Friday and wants the two to sit together in the vestry. It also works as an everyday green stole for a minister who prefers restrained embroidery to a dense goldwork panel.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders, with any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height on the product page for a suggested length, and adjust it if you prefer - the figure you give travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Is there a matching stole in another colour?

Yes. This green stole is cut from the same fabric and gold piping as our black Passion-themed stole in this collection, so the two work well as a green-and-black pair for a minister who wants pieces that sit together in the vestry.

They are not sold as a formal boxed set; each is its own listing, cut to whatever length you specify, but the fabric and trim match closely enough to be worn as a pair across Ordinary Time and Good Friday.

Why is the embroidery only at the bottom of the panel?

It is a design choice rather than an economy measure. Keeping the chalice, wheat and grape motifs to the lower third leaves most of the panel as plain woven-pattern cloth, which suits Ordinary Time's understated character better than a dense, full-length goldwork design.

The same restrained placement is used on the matching black stole in this collection, so the two share one design language rather than one being a simplified version of the other.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
