Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

An ivory stole embroidered entirely in gold thread, with two stacked repeats of wheat sheaves and grape clusters on each panel, closing in a monstrance emblem near the fringe.

A Eucharistic stole for Ordinary Time, Corpus Christi and a priest's ordination.

Symbolism

Wheat and the grapevine stand for bread and wine, the two elements of the Eucharist, repeated twice down each panel.

The design closes in a monstrance rather than a chalice, so the last image a wearer sees is the host held up for adoration.

Details

About this stole

The Ivory and Gold Monstrance Stole is worked entirely in gold thread on a smooth ivory ground: two stacked repeats of wheat sheaves and grape clusters run down each panel, closing near the hem in a monstrance, a radiating emblem holding a single host.

01

Design and symbolism

Unlike a chalice-themed stole, which closes on the vessel that holds the wine, this one closes on the monstrance, the vessel used to display the consecrated host for adoration, which sets it apart from the chalice-and-wheat design found elsewhere in this collection. Above it, wheat sheaves and grapevine clusters repeat twice down each panel, the two most direct images of bread and wine that the Eucharist is built on. The two repeats are worked identically, so the panel reads as a steady, even pattern rather than building toward a single climax until the monstrance appears at the very end. The whole design is worked in a single gold thread, without any secondary colour, giving it a plainer, more monochrome character than some of our other eucharistic stoles.

02

Liturgical use

White and gold is worn through Ordinary Time and is the proper colour for Corpus Christi, where a monstrance-themed stole is especially fitting. It also suits First Communion and a priest's own ordination. It is not a stole for Lent, Advent or a funeral Mass, all of which call for violet or black. Because the palette stays entirely gold, it also pairs cleanly with a chasuble or other vestments trimmed in plain gold, without a second thread colour to match.

03

Who it is for

Cut for a priest, in the presbyteral style worn straight down both shoulders, this suits Sunday and feast-day Mass and works well as an ordination gift for a man entering a Eucharist-centred ministry.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added for every further 5 in, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length, which you can override. Your length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only. Do not machine wash or tumble dry the monochrome gold embroidery or the twisted fringe.

Store rolled, not folded, so the wheat and grape repeats stay free of crease lines. Keep out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread's sheen, and press from the reverse on a low setting, lifting the twisted fringe clear of the iron.

FAQs

Before you order

Why a monstrance instead of a chalice?

The embroidered emblem near the hem is a monstrance, the vessel used to display the consecrated host for adoration, rather than a chalice. It is a deliberate visual choice that sets this stole apart from our chalice-and-wheat design, and it suits parishes that hold Eucharistic adoration or benediction alongside Mass.

Is this the right stole for Corpus Christi?

Yes. White and gold is the proper colour for Corpus Christi, and the monstrance, wheat and grapevine motifs speak directly to the feast, which is centred on the reserved and displayed host.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
