Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A gold brocade stole with raised poinsettia appliques and embroidered holly.

Made for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Christmas-season Communion services.

Symbolism

Holly's evergreen leaf and red berry are a long-standing Christmas motif, read by tradition as a reminder of the crown of thorns and the blood of the Passion.

The poinsettia carries no equivalent doctrinal reading; it is a seasonal flower associated with Christmas by custom rather than by established symbolism.

Details

About this stole

This Christmas stole sets three raised poinsettia appliques into a gold brocade ground on each panel, with embroidered holly and berries linking them in a gold scroll vine.

01

Design and symbolism

The poinsettia is worked as a raised, velvet-textured applique rather than flat embroidery, giving the deep red petals real dimension against the self-patterned gold brocade. Between the three flowers on each panel, green holly leaves and small red berry clusters are joined by a gold scroll-vine stitch. Holly's evergreen leaf and red berry have long stood, by tradition, for the crown of thorns and the blood of the Passion carried into a season otherwise marked by birth; the poinsettia itself carries no equivalent doctrinal meaning and is included here as the season's familiar flower rather than as a formal Christian symbol. The back panel is left plain brocade, with a small gold beaded trim at the edges and no fringe.

02

Liturgical use

This is a Christmas stole and nothing else. Gold and white are treated as the same solemn class in most Western traditions, and gold is a common choice for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day specifically because of its festal weight; some parishes will simply use white instead, which is equally correct. It has no place in Advent, which precedes it and is kept in violet or, in some traditions, blue.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor vesting for a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day Eucharist, or for any Communion service kept within the Christmas season.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over both shoulders in a presbyteral cut worn straight down. A made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is the same price as standard; each further 5 in beyond 120 in, up to 160 in, adds $10. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, and adjust it if you prefer — the figure you choose, along with your height and any notes, carries through to the cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and mention the raised poinsettia appliques to your cleaner so they can be handled with care.

Store rolled, not folded, to keep the applique petals from creasing.

Keep away from direct sunlight.

Do not press directly over the appliques; press the plain brocade areas from the reverse only.

FAQs

Before you order

Is the poinsettia a religious symbol on this stole?

Not formally. The poinsettia is a seasonal flower associated with Christmas by modern custom rather than by any established Christian symbolism, included here as a familiar seasonal flower rather than a doctrinal symbol.

The holly leaves and berries worked alongside it carry the more traditional reading, standing by custom for the crown of thorns and the blood of the Passion.

Does this stole have fringe like your other pieces?

No. This design finishes with a small gold beaded trim at the edges rather than a fringed or tasselled hem.

That suits the raised, dimensional poinsettia work better than a heavier fringe would.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
