Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Grapevine Communion Stole is a burgundy, velvet-look stole worked in gold with the two plants of the Eucharist: wheat near the neckline, a scrolling vine heavy with grape leaves and clusters through the centre of each panel, and a bundled wheat sheaf near the hem, finished in a thick gold fringe. It is available in a length you set yourself.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel opens with a small wheat sprig at the neck, moves into a grapevine with clearly modelled leaves and clusters of grapes through the body of the panel, and closes with a bundled wheat sheaf near the hem, all in gold thread against the velvet-look burgundy ground. Wheat and grapes are the two elements of the Eucharist itself, bread and wine, and putting both on the same stole rather than choosing one keeps the design tied directly to the sacrament it is made for, without needing a cross or chalice to make the point. A separate gold cross appears only on the back yoke, where the front vine does not reach.

02

Liturgical use

Burgundy falls within the red liturgical class, used across the West for Palm Sunday, Good Friday, Pentecost and the feasts of martyrs, and by wider custom for ordinations. This particular stole, with its Eucharistic wheat and grape design, is best suited to Communion and Eucharist-centred services generally and to ordinations, rather than to Palm Sunday or Pentecost specifically, where the colour is correct but the imagery is not the point being made.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who wants a stole built specifically around the Communion table, rather than a general-purpose red piece, is the clearest fit. The velvet-look ground gives it a heavier, more formal presence than the satin-look burgundy elsewhere in the catalogue, which also suits it to an ordination gift.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length once you enter your height, which you can adjust; your final length, your height and any notes travel through to the cart, checkout and order automatically.

FAQs

Before you order

Why are wheat and grapes both embroidered on this stole?

Wheat and grapes stand for the two elements of Communion, bread and wine, and this design puts both on the stole rather than relying on a cross or chalice to make the connection to the Eucharist. Wheat opens the design near the neck and closes it again as a sheaf near the hem, with the grapevine running the length between.

It is a straightforward, literal choice of symbolism, suited to a priest or pastor who wants the stole's meaning to be immediately clear rather than requiring explanation.

Does the back of this stole match the embroidered front?

No. The back yoke carries a single gold cross rather than the grapevine and wheat used on the front panels, and the drape below it reads as a smoother satin-look fabric rather than the velvet-look front.

This is typical of our fuller designs: the most detailed embroidery goes where the congregation sees it, and the back is kept simpler.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
