Details

About this habit

A solid brown habit with a hood and two patch pockets, cut without a cincture, in a heavier brushed cotton.

01

The cut

This habit is a plain hooded tunic with a patch pocket set at each hip, the only habit in this range with pockets built into a single-colour cut rather than added alongside a scapular or capelet. The hood is moderate in depth, rounded rather than sharply pointed. Sleeves are wide and dropped, with an unfinished edge. No cincture is shown or supplied with this garment; it is worn as a loose pull-on tunic. The hem sits at ankle length rather than sweeping the floor, shorter than most of the habits we cut. The habit closes with nothing at the front and pulls on over the head.

02

Cloth and finish

The cotton is heavier here than in most of our habits, brushed to a soft, almost suede-like face with a visible flecked texture running through it. It is matte throughout and holds its shape without much drape. The colour is a solid medium brown, sometimes called russet, with no second colour anywhere on the garment.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A solid brown habit with a hood and patch pockets is Franciscan in character: earth-brown cloth, a plain hood and working pockets are close to the classic friar cut, even without a cincture in these photographs. It suits friars and monks in a brown-habited community, novices in formation, and lay people or tertiaries who keep a Franciscan-style rule of life and want a plain, pocketed habit for daily wear.

04

Size and fit

Fourteen size codes are cut, pairing a chest measurement with a robe length in each case: S 34-37in, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, with lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in taken from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, the fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes and cut to your own figures. The habit closes with nothing at the front and pulls on over the head.

Care

This brushed cotton takes a normal cool wash well; turn it inside out first to protect the brushed face and the pocket edges.

Tumble drying on a low setting is fine for this weight of cloth, though line drying keeps the brushed finish looking newer for longer.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this habit come with a cincture?

No. As photographed this habit is worn as a loose pull-on tunic with no cincture included. If you want a rope cincture with it, choose one from our custom vestments range and we can supply it alongside your order.

How do the patch pockets sit on the habit?

There is one patch pocket at each hip, stitched onto the outside of the tunic rather than set into a seam. Both sit at a comfortable hand height for everyday use.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
