Details
About this habit
A brown habit with a grey hooded scapular, finished with a gold-embroidered cross at the hem and on each cuff.
The cut
The habit pairs a brown tunic with a grey scapular running the full length of the body front and back, and a grey hood set at the top of it. Near the base of the scapular, front and back, a cross worked in gold thread sits among small leaf and floral flourishes; the same small cross motif is repeated on each sleeve cuff. The sleeves are wide, falling in the bell shape used across this range. A black rope cincture closes the waist, its tasselled ends left to hang. No front opening is cut into the tunic and the hem is plain and floor-length; the habit is put on over the head and fastens nowhere at the front.
Cloth and finish
The cotton has a light texture with a little natural wrinkling, matte rather than glossy. The tunic is brown and the scapular and hood are a contrasting grey, so the base cloth is two-tone before the embroidery is added. The gold thread of the cross and leaf motif is the only other colour on the garment, worked at the scapular hem and again, smaller, on both cuffs.
This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.
Who wears it
Brown and grey together, with an embroidered cross, are not the dress of one named order; the colouring and the embroidery here are our own rather than a documented habit pattern. The cross carries the plain meaning it always does in Christian dress, the central sign of the faith, marking Christ's death and resurrection, rather than any claim about a particular community. It suits monks and oblates in a community that wears this colourway, and lay people who want a habit marked with a cross for prayer or as a gift at profession or ordination.
Size and fit
We cut to fourteen graded sizes: S 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, each paired with a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure sits alongside the fourteen graded codes as a fifteenth option, priced the same as the L sizes and cut to your own figures. The habit is put on over the head and fastens nowhere at the front.
