Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A royal-blue velvet-look and ivory stole with three gold Celtic crosses at the neckline and a dense gold lily-and-pomegranate vine down the ivory bands.

For Marian feasts and, where Advent blue is kept, for Advent; also given as an ordination gift.

Symbolism

The lily has long stood for Mary's purity in church art. The three Celtic crosses at the neckline group the cross motif more fully than the single cross used elsewhere in the catalogue.

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole pairs a royal-blue velvet-look centre with wide ivory bands on each panel, three gold Celtic crosses grouped at the neckline and a dense gold vine of lilies and pomegranate-style pods running the length of the ivory to a thick gold fringe. It can be tailored to whatever length its wearer needs.

01

Design and symbolism

Where most of the stoles in this catalogue keep to one continuous panel, this one is built from two fabrics: a blue velvet-look centre strip on each side, flanked by broad ivory bands, with white piping marking the join. Three gold Celtic, or ringed, crosses sit together at the neckline, one on each panel and a third centred between them, an unusual grouping in place of the single cross most stoles carry. Below them the ivory bands are worked densely in gold with a scrolling vine of lily blooms and bulbous seed pods resembling pomegranates. The lily has long stood for Mary's purity in church art, which is the thread running through this whole design; the pomegranate-like pods, less common but not unheard of in devotional embroidery, are usually read as a sign of fullness and fruitfulness rather than anything more specific, and we would rather say that plainly than guess further.

02

Liturgical use

Blue is not a colour of the Roman rite. It is used by custom for Marian feasts in a number of Catholic and Anglican settings, distinct from the Church's official Marian white, and it also appears, separately, as an Advent colour in Sarum and some Anglican use. This stole leans on both associations at once, through its Celtic crosses and lily vine, which makes it suited to Marian feast days and, in parishes that keep Advent blue, to Advent as well. Where a parish uses only white for Mary and only violet for Advent, this piece will not match either occasion.

03

Who it is for

A priest vested for a Marian feast, or ordained in a parish with Celtic or Marian devotional character, is the clearest match. The two-fabric construction and dense vine embroidery put this toward the more elaborate end of the catalogue, which also makes it a natural ordination gift for someone who will wear it for years rather than once.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end, in the presbyteral cut worn straight down over both shoulders. Made to measure from 84 in to 120 in costs the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in past that, up to 160 in. The height box on this page suggests a length from your height, which you can override; your chosen length, height and any notes carry through to the cart, checkout and order automatically.

Care

Dry clean only. The velvet-look centre crushes under direct pressing, so ask your cleaner to steam rather than iron it, and the pale ivory bands mark more easily than the blue, so keep both away from make-up and oils.

Store rolled rather than folded, out of direct sunlight, and take care with the gold fringe when handling.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole for Advent, Marian feasts, or both?

Blue is not part of the Roman rite's official colour scheme, but custom has attached it to two separate uses: Marian feast days in a number of Catholic and Anglican settings, and Advent in Sarum and some Anglican parishes. This design, with its lily-and-Mary imagery alongside its Celtic crosses, was built to work for either.

If your own parish keeps a stricter line between the two, wear it for whichever occasion matches your local custom, and choose a violet stole for Advent if your church does not use Advent blue.

Why are there three Celtic crosses at the neckline?

Most of our stoles carry one cross per panel at most; this design groups three together at the centre front, one on each panel and a third between them, which reads as a deliberately fuller statement at the neckline than the single cross repeated lower down on the back yoke.

There is no specific doctrine attached to the number three here beyond the general Christian weight the number carries; it is a design choice rather than a coded symbol we can point to with certainty.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
