Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

A royal-blue stole with a crowned gold 'AM' monogram, a red rose, bell flowers and the words 'Ave Maria' embroidered in full down each panel.

For Marian feasts including the Immaculate Conception, worn where Marian blue, rather than white, is the local custom.

Symbolism

The crowned 'AM' monogram and its ring of stars are shorthand for Mary honoured as Queen, drawing on the 'crown of twelve stars' from Revelation read in Catholic tradition as a figure of Mary. The rose is one of Mary's oldest devotional titles, the Mystical Rose.

Details

About this stole

This Marian stole spells its devotion out in words as well as pictures: a crowned gold "AM" monogram and ring of stars near the neck, a red rose worked with gold rays, a stem of small bell-shaped flowers, and the words "AVE MARIA" embroidered in gold down each panel of royal-blue satin-look fabric. It is available in whatever length its wearer needs.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel runs top to bottom through a small sequence: a ring of gold stars beneath a gold crown, over the monogram "AM"; a red rose set against gold rays; a stem of small white bell-shaped flowers in the lily-of-the-valley style; the words "AVE MARIA" stacked across two lines; and a second small rose near the hem, above gold fringe. The crown and monogram together are a familiar shorthand for Mary as Queen, and the twelve stars that often ring such a monogram allude to the woman "clothed with the sun" and "a crown of twelve stars" in Revelation, read in Catholic tradition as a figure of Mary. "Ave Maria", the Latin for "Hail Mary", spelled out in full rather than abbreviated, leaves no doubt about the stole's occasion. The rose is one of the oldest titles given to Mary in devotional writing, often called the Mystical Rose, and it is the flower this stole gives the most visual weight to outside the lettering itself.

02

Liturgical use

Blue is not a liturgical colour recognised by the Roman rite's official rubrics, which use white for Marian feasts including the Immaculate Conception. Blue for Mary is instead a long custom, strong in Spanish, Latin American and many parish devotional practices, and increasingly adopted elsewhere precisely because it distinguishes a Marian occasion visually from the general white class. Where your parish or diocese expects white for Marian feasts, choose one of the white stoles in the catalogue instead; where Marian blue is the local custom, this piece was made for it.

03

Who it is for

A Catholic priest, or a priest or pastor in another tradition that keeps Marian devotions, is the natural wearer, particularly for the Immaculate Conception and other major feasts of Mary. The lettering-forward design also reads well as an ordination gift for a priest with a personal Marian devotion.

04

Length and fit

The stole is finished at 120 in (305 cm) as standard, measured end to end over the shoulders in the presbyteral cut. A made-to-measure length anywhere from 84 in to 120 in costs no more than standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. Give your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or enter your own figure; the length, height and any notes you provide travel through to your cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

What does the crowned 'AM' monogram on this stole stand for?

AM stands for Ave Maria, the same greeting spelled out in full lower down each panel. The crown above it is a common shorthand for Mary honoured as Queen, and the ring of small stars around it echoes the 'crown of twelve stars' from Revelation, read in Catholic tradition as a figure of Mary.

Together the three elements repeat one idea rather than three separate ones: this is a stole built entirely around Marian devotion, front to back.

Is blue the correct colour for Marian feasts everywhere?

No. The Roman rite's official rubrics call for white on Marian feasts, including the Immaculate Conception; blue for Mary is a widespread custom rather than a rubric, strongest in Spanish and Latin American practice and in parishes that have since adopted it elsewhere.

If your diocese or parish expects white for Marian occasions, one of our white stoles will be the safer choice; if Marian blue is your local custom, this stole was designed with that practice in mind.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
