Details

About this habit

Coarse black cotton, cut plain with a hood and no scapular, finished with a tan rope cincture: a habit for daily wear.

01

The cut

This is the plainest habit in the range: a floor-length tunic and an attached hood, with no scapular or capelet layered over it. The hood is a simple pointed shape that lies flat against the back when it is down. Sleeves are cut wide, with a turned-back cuff rather than a plain edge. A tan rope cincture, knotted at the centre front with long tasselled ends, is the only accent on an otherwise all-black garment. There are no pockets. The tunic goes on over the head, with no front opening of any kind, and the hem is plain and floor-length.

02

Cloth and finish

The cotton here is heavier and more visibly woven than a smooth habit cloth: it has a coarse, linen-like texture that wrinkles readily and sits with a matte, almost rustic surface. It is black throughout, with the tan of the cincture rope the only colour against it. The weave is honest rather than refined, closer to workwear cloth than to a polished dress fabric.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A plain black hooded tunic without a scapular is close to the Benedictine-style habit at its simplest, and reads as Benedictine in character, though the lack of a scapular means it could equally pass as a generic monastic or friar habit rather than one order's dress specifically. It is worn by monks, friars and novices in community, and by lay people and oblates who want a plain, unadorned habit for private prayer.

04

Size and fit

Fourteen graded sizes are offered, each built from a chest range and a robe length: S is 34-37in, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, and the length number, one of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62, is measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes and is cut to measurements you provide. It slips on over the head; nothing fastens at the front.

Care

Being a coarser cotton, this habit can take a normal cool machine wash and does not need special handling, though line drying keeps the black from fading faster than a tumble dryer will.

Press it warm if you iron it at all; the tan rope cincture is best hung to dry rather than knotted away wet.

FAQs

Before you order

Why does this habit have no scapular?

It is cut as a plain hooded tunic by design, without a scapular or capelet layered over it. If you want a scapular version, our black habit with a pointed capelet is built on the same tunic and hood.

Does the tan rope cincture come with the habit?

Yes. The tan rope cincture shown, knotted at the front with long tasselled ends, is included with the habit rather than sold as a separate item.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
