Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

The Cypress Cross Funeral Stole is a black stole with a damask-textured ground, its two panels repeating a gold cypress tree, a Latin cross and a small cross-botonee down their length to a twisted gold fringe. It is available in any length from 84 in to 160 in.

01

Design and symbolism

Each panel opens near the neck with a small gold leaf, then a tall, narrow cypress tree worked entirely in gold thread against the black ground. Below the tree sits a plain Latin cross, then the cypress shape repeats a second time, and the sequence closes near the hem with a smaller cross-botonee, its arms ending in trefoils, just above the fringe. The cypress is an old churchyard tree, planted over graves for centuries because it does not shed its needles; set twice on a funeral stole, it stands for a mourning that does not simply end when the leaves fall. The cross beneath it, plain and unadorned, keeps the design from becoming decorative for its own sake.

02

Liturgical use

Black is the historic colour for funerals and requiem Masses in the Roman and Anglo-Catholic traditions, and it remains available, alongside violet or white, in most other Western churches that mark the rite at all. This stole is built for that single use. It is not a stole for Lent, even though some parishes still associate black loosely with penitence; Lent in this catalogue is kept to violet.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister leading a funeral, memorial or requiem service is the wearer this stole was designed for. The back yoke carries a single small cypress tree outline in gold, so even from behind the pulpit the piece reads as funeral dress rather than a plain black stole worn for want of anything else.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, in the usual presbyteral cut worn straight down both sides. Made to measure from 84 in to 120 in costs no more than standard, and each further 5 in past that adds $10, up to 160 in. The height box on this page will suggest a length once you enter your height, and you can override its suggestion; your final length, height and any notes carry through automatically to checkout and the order record.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is a cypress tree used on a funeral stole?

Cypress has long been planted in churchyards and cemeteries because it keeps its needles through winter rather than shedding them, and it became a familiar visual shorthand for a grief that endures. It appears twice on each panel of this stole rather than once, which keeps the motif from reading as a single small detail.

The plain Latin cross set between the two cypress trees keeps the design anchored to the resurrection hope the funeral rite is built on, rather than to mourning alone.

Does this stole have fringe or plain ends?

It finishes in a twisted gold fringe at both ends, matching the gold thread used throughout the embroidery.

The small cross-botonee sits just above the fringe on each panel, so the last motif the eye meets before the hem is a cross rather than a bare run of fabric.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
