Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Royal blue satin stole with an ivory, gold-trimmed yoke, embroidered with stars over a crown, a lily, an Ave Maria monogram, a rose vine and a crescent moon. For Marian feast Masses and ordination gifts for a priest with a Marian devotion.

Symbolism

The ring of stars over a crown and the crescent moon under Mary's feet both come from the woman clothed with the sun in Revelation 12, the biblical text behind the Immaculate Conception. The interlaced AM monogram abbreviates Ave Maria, and the lily is her standard flower of purity.

Details

About this stole

This priest's stole is worked in royal blue satin-look cloth with an ivory, gold-trimmed yoke. Each panel carries, top to bottom, a ring of stars over a small crown, a lily, a crown over an interlaced AM monogram, a rose-and-lily-of-the-valley vine, and a crescent moon near the fringe.

01

Design and symbolism

Five registers run the length of each panel, all bordered in gold and finished in gold fringe. The reverse is plain gold satin, visible only at the neck yoke when worn. The ring of stars over a crown and the crescent moon underfoot both come from the woman clothed with the sun in Revelation 12, the text behind the doctrine of the Immaculate Conception. The interlaced AM monogram abbreviates Ave Maria, 'Hail Mary,' and the lily is Mary's standard flower of purity.

02

Liturgical use

Blue is not one of the Roman rite's core liturgical colours - white, red, green, violet and, in some uses, black cover the calendar there. Where blue is worn for Marian feasts, as here, it is by long custom in many Catholic and Anglican parishes rather than by rubric, and by separate custom for Advent in Sarum/Anglican use. Check with your own parish or diocese before assuming blue is expected on a given day.

03

Who it is for

A priest with a Marian devotion, for the Immaculate Conception, the Annunciation, or another feast of Our Lady kept in blue by local custom, and equally suited as an ordination gift for a priest known for that devotion. It is not intended as a substitute for white on Easter or Christmas, nor for green through Ordinary Time.

04

Length and fit

Standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), measured over both shoulders, with any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in priced the same as standard. Beyond 120 in, $10 is added for each further 5 in, up to 160 in. Enter your height on the product page for a suggested length, and change it if you prefer - the figure you give travels through to your cart, checkout and order.

Care

Dry clean only, and ask your cleaner to treat the ivory yoke and the blue body as one piece rather than separately.

Store rolled, not folded, away from direct sunlight, which dulls the blue faster than the gold thread.

Press from the reverse side on a low setting.

FAQs

Before you order

Is blue an official liturgical colour?

Not in the Roman rite's core set, which runs to white, red, green, violet and, in some uses, black. Blue does not appear among them.

Where blue is worn, as on this stole, it is by long custom rather than by rubric: for Marian feasts in many Catholic and Anglican parishes, and separately for Advent under the old Sarum use kept in some Anglican churches. Check with your own parish or diocese before assuming it is expected on a given day.

What does the AM monogram on this stole stand for?

AM stands for Ave Maria, 'Hail Mary,' the opening words of the angel's greeting to Mary at the Annunciation. Here the letters are interlaced and set under a small crown, mid-panel between the lily above and the rose vine below.

It sits alongside the ring of stars, crown and crescent moon, all drawn from the same body of Marian iconography around the Immaculate Conception.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
