Details

About this habit

A taupe wool habit with a short, oval cream panel across the chest like a wide collar, edged in cream again at the hood opening, worn over plain taupe sleeves and cinched with a tan rope belt.

01

The cut

The cream panel here is shorter and more rounded than the full-length scapulars we cut on other habits. It sits across the chest and upper back, ending around mid-torso rather than running to the hem, so it reads as a collar or yoke rather than a scapular proper. The pointed hood has a cream edge trim to match. Sleeves are the same taupe as the body, with no contrast, and there are no pockets on this cut.

02

Cloth and finish

The cloth is a medium-weight wool with a smooth, brushed, matte face. It has enough weight to hold the shape of the yoke panel without needing interfacing, and it drapes cleanly through the skirt.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The plain taupe sleeves and rope cincture read as a generic friar base, but the short collar panel, rather than a full scapular, is a simplified cut of our own; it is not the dress of a named order, and the taupe-and-cream colouring is our choice rather than any community's. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who keep a rule of life, and anyone who prefers this less traditional silhouette for prayer. It also works well for someone who wants the look of a habit's collar and hood without the weight of a full-length scapular.

04

Size and fit

Every habit we cut comes in fourteen graded sizes plus Made to Measure; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. S runs 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in, and each size code carries a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in from the nape of the neck, so M-58 and L-56 differ in both fit and length. Send your own measurements instead if you would rather use Made to Measure. It pulls on over the head with nothing to fasten at the front.

See the full religious habits collection, read the fabric guide for how our wools compare, and check the measuring guide before you choose a size.

Care

Air this wool habit between wears rather than washing it often, and have it dry cleaned when it needs a full clean.

The cream panel and hood trim are pale and will mark more easily than the taupe body, so keep them away from anything that could rub or stain.

FAQs

Before you order

Is the cream panel a full scapular?

No. It is shorter and more rounded than a full-length scapular, ending around mid-torso front and back rather than running to the hem. It sits and reads more like a wide collar or yoke.

Does the taupe and cream colouring mean anything?

No. The taupe-and-cream pairing is a choice of ours rather than a signifier belonging to any order or community. Choose it because you like the combination, not for any wider meaning.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
