Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Overview

What this piece is

Red-to-orange ombre clergy stole with a dove and painterly flame embroidery worked into the colour gradient.

For Pentecost Sunday and ordination services.

Symbolism

The dove descending into fire is the Pentecost sign of the Holy Spirit's coming. The burgundy-to-orange gradient echoes the movement of flame rather than fixing it at one point on the cloth.

Details

About this stole

Where a traditional Pentecost stole sets its dove and flame against a flat red ground, this one lets the cloth itself carry the fire: a dip-dyed gradient from deep burgundy at the shoulder to warm orange at the hem, with flame shapes and a white dove worked into the colour field in gold and orange thread. It is designed for Pentecost and for ordinations.

01

Design and symbolism

The fabric is a fine-woven cloth with a dip-dyed colour gradient rather than a flat woven colour: it moves from deep burgundy at the top of the panel through to a warm orange near the hem, a true gradient rather than a solid ground with an applied motif. A white embroidered dove sits at the upper chest of one panel, ringed by fine gold swirl and ray lines, while stylised flame shapes in orange, gold and red rise up through the lower half of both panels, threaded with further gold swirl accents.

The dove descending into fire remains the same image used across our Pentecost designs: the Holy Spirit's coming, recalled from the tongues of fire in Acts 2. Here the flame is rendered with a painterly, gestural quality rather than a crisp appliqué shape, and the colour gradient itself stands in for the movement of fire rather than fixing it at one point on the panel.

02

Liturgical use

Red belongs to Pentecost Sunday and, in many traditions, to ordination rites, since the same Spirit invoked at Pentecost is invoked over a new priest or minister. This stole's imagery is built specifically around that Pentecost dove-and-fire theme, so it is best kept to Pentecost, ordination and confirmation services rather than worn on a general red day such as a martyr's feast.

03

Who it is for

A priest, pastor or minister who wants a more contemporary, painterly take on the Pentecost stole, rather than the crisper appliqué look of a traditional design, is the person this piece suits. If you would prefer a plain red ground with the dove and flame set only at the hem, see our other red Pentecost stole in this collection.

04

Length and fit

This stole finishes at a standard 120 in (305 cm), end to end over both shoulders. Anything from 84 in to 120 in is made to measure at that same standard price, and lengths past 120 in, up to 160 in, are charged $10 per additional 5 in. A height entered on the product page returns a suggested length, which you are welcome to adjust; whatever you settle on is recorded with your order at checkout.

Compare it with our other red vestments and the wider clergy stole collection, or read our fabric guide for more on how an ombre finish differs from a solid satin ground.

Care

Dry clean only, and mention the dip-dyed finish to your cleaner, since a gradient can show handling marks more readily than a solid colour.

Store rolled rather than folded, avoiding a crease across the colour transition, keep it out of sunlight to protect the gradient, and press only from the reverse at a low heat suited to the fabric.

FAQs

Before you order

How is this different from your other red Pentecost stole?

Our other Pentecost design uses a flat red ground with the dove and flame set only near the hem. This stole instead carries a true dip-dyed gradient from burgundy to orange across the whole panel, with a more painterly, gestural rendering of the flame rather than a crisp appliqué shape.

Why is the flame rendered as a colour gradient instead of a solid appliqué shape?

The flame is worked with a painterly, gestural quality rather than a crisp appliqué shape, letting the burgundy-to-orange gradient itself carry the sense of rising fire rather than fixing it at one point on the panel. It's a more contemporary take on the traditional dove-and-flame Pentecost image; if you'd prefer the crisper appliqué look, see our other red Pentecost stole.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
