Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This Advent stole sets a single large Tree of Life across each navy panel, its canopy worked as a Gothic stained-glass window in red, green, blue and gold, its trunk a twist of brown and gold bands that spreads into visible roots near the hem. Gold piping runs along both edges, and The Clergy Couture will make it to whatever length you need.

01

Design and symbolism

Rather than a small repeated motif, this design gives almost the whole lower two-thirds of each panel to one tree, framed by a pointed Gothic arch and filled with faceted panes of colour as though the canopy itself were a church window. The trunk twists downward in bands of brown and gold and opens into a spreading root system at the base, an unusual choice; most tree motifs on stoles stop at ground level. The Tree of Life runs through scripture from Genesis to Revelation as a picture of life sustained by God, and showing its roots as plainly as its branches keeps that whole picture in view rather than just the visible half.

02

Liturgical use

Blue is not a colour of the Roman rite, which keeps Advent in violet. It is, however, an established Advent colour in Sarum use and in a good number of Anglican and Episcopal parishes that have adopted it to mark Advent as a season of hopeful watching rather than penitence, distinct from Lent's violet. Where your parish follows the Roman calendar strictly, this piece is not the Advent stole for you; where it keeps Sarum or Advent blue, it is built for exactly that season.

03

Who it is for

A priest or pastor in a parish that already observes Advent blue is the clearest fit here, particularly one who wants a single striking motif rather than a repeating pattern. Write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering if you have a question about the neckline or hem finish.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm) end to end over the shoulders, worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and $10 is added for every further 5 in beyond that, up to 160 in. Enter your height in the box on this page to get a suggested length, then adjust it if you prefer; your final length, your height and any notes carry through to checkout and the order.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is this Advent stole blue rather than violet?

Blue is not a colour recognised in the Roman rite, which keeps Advent in violet throughout. It is, though, an established alternative in Sarum use and in many Anglican and Episcopal parishes, chosen specifically to separate Advent's watchful hope from Lent's more penitential violet.

If your parish follows the Roman calendar for Advent, choose one of our violet stoles instead; if it keeps Sarum or Advent blue, this piece was made for that custom.

What does the Tree of Life motif on this stole represent?

The Tree of Life appears at both ends of scripture, in the garden of Genesis and again in the New Jerusalem of Revelation, as an image of life that God sustains rather than life that runs out on its own.

This design shows the tree's roots as well as its canopy, which is not typical of most tree embroidery on stoles; it keeps the unseen half of the tree's life in the picture, not just the visible branches above ground.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
