Details

About this habit

A heavy, flecked grey wool habit built around a two-tier cape collar, a black upper layer over a grey lower layer, both edged with a soft scalloped trim, worn over a plain floor-length grey tunic. It is available in your size code or tailored to your own measurements.

01

The cut

There is no scapular on this style; the two-tier collar is the only ornament, sitting over a pointed hood and spreading out from the shoulders in stacked layers, black above and grey below, each finished with a scalloped edge. Below the collar the tunic is plain and unbroken to the floor. Wide bell sleeves match the grey body. A tan rope cincture ties at the waist with hanging knotted ends, and there are no pockets on this cut.

02

Cloth and finish

This is the heaviest cloth in our range: a coarse, flecked wool with a visible melange texture, closer to tweed than to a smooth worsted. It has real body and hangs stiffer than our lighter wools, particularly through the collar tiers, which is what lets them stand away from the shoulder rather than lying flat.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

We are not describing this cut as belonging to any one order. The plain hooded tunic and rope cincture have a generic friar-like base, but the layered, scalloped collar is a construction of our own rather than a documented monastic dress. It is worn by monks, friars, oblates and lay people who keep a rule of prayer, and by anyone who wants a habit of this particular shape for its own sake.

04

Size and fit

Every habit we sell comes in fourteen graded sizes and a Made to Measure option; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. Chest sizing runs from S (34-37in) to 2XL (50-53in), and each size code is paired with a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in measured from the nape of the neck, so a code like XL-60 tells you both chest and length at once. Give us your own figures under Made to Measure if the graded run does not fit. The habit pulls on over the head with no front closure.

Care

This coarse wool needs gentle handling. Air it out between wears and brush off surface dust rather than washing it often; have it dry cleaned when it needs more than that.

Keep the scalloped edges of the cape tiers away from a hot iron; steam gently from a short distance instead of pressing directly.

FAQs

Before you order

How do the two collar tiers sit?

The upper tier is black and the lower tier is grey, both scalloped at the edge and stacked over the shoulders above the hood. This style has no scapular; the tiered collar is the only ornament on the habit.

Is the rope cincture included?

Yes. The habit is shown and supplied with the tan rope cincture tied at the waist, as pictured.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
