Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This stole keeps most of each green panel plain, and lets a single embroidered tree, in a canopy of six or more colours, carry the whole design low near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

Where several stoles in our range run embroidery the full length of the panel, this one does the opposite: a long stretch of plain green satin runs from the shoulder down, and only in the lower third does a tree appear, with a brown-gold trunk and root base and a canopy worked in red, orange, yellow, green, teal and purple. A small gold outline cross sits at the back collar. The tree of life is a scriptural image that runs from the garden in Genesis to the city in Revelation, standing for growth, healing and permanence; the wide range of leaf colours here reads naturally as a gathered congregation, varied but rooted in one place. There is no fringe on this stole; the ends are left plain, which keeps the eye on the tree itself rather than on a decorated hem.

02

Liturgical use

Green is the colour of Ordinary Time, and this stole carries no further seasonal marker — the tree of life is not tied to a specific feast in any tradition represented here. It is not worn during Advent, Lent, Christmas or Easter, and it makes no claim to a colour beyond the plain green of the ordinary Sundays it is built for.

03

Who it is for

A pastor, minister or priest who prefers a quieter, less densely worked stole for regular Ordinary Time services, or wants a lighter piece for warm-weather wear. The large plain area above the motif also gives a congregation room to notice the tree itself, rather than reading it as one detail among many.

04

Length and fit

The standard finished length is 120 in (305 cm), end to end over both shoulders, in a presbyteral cut worn straight down. Lengths from 84 in to 120 in, made to measure, cost the same as standard; beyond 120 in, $10 is added per further 5 in, up to 160 in. Give your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, or set your own — whatever you choose carries through to the cart, checkout and order.

FAQs

Before you order

Why is so much of this stole left plain?

The design is deliberately sparser than most pieces in this range: a long run of plain green satin sits above the tree motif, which is placed low on each panel rather than repeated down the full length.

It suits clergy who prefer a lighter, less densely worked stole for regular Ordinary Time wear.

Does the tree of life motif suit a funeral or memorial service?

Green is not the customary colour for a funeral in most traditions, which more often call for white or violet, so this stole would not be the standard choice for that service.

The tree of life imagery itself, standing for growth and permanence, would suit a funeral stole in white or violet if one is needed; this green piece is built for ordinary Sunday use instead.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
