Details

About this habit

This forest-green habit is cut as a single hooded tunic rather than a tunic-and-scapular construction: the colour runs unbroken from collar to hem, the hood sits deep and pointed at the back, and a brown rope cincture gathers the waist. It pulls on over the head and has no front fastening.

01

The cut

The body is one continuous piece of cloth rather than a tunic layered under a separate scapular panel. Wide bell sleeves taper from a dropped shoulder, and the pointed hood is built with a deep triangular back seam that lets it stand slightly off the neck rather than lying flat. A brown rope cincture ties at the front, its tails left to hang below the hip. The hem is the one departure from a plain cut: it falls in two stepped tiers rather than a single straight line, which gives the skirt of the habit a little more movement when walking. There are no pockets, and no closure beyond the pull-on neckline.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a cotton habit with a smooth, matte, twill-like surface, closer to a workwear cloth than anything glossy. It holds its shape at the shoulder and sleeve while still moving freely through the body, and the forest-green dye is solid and even across every panel, hood included. There is no contrast colour anywhere on the garment; the only colour break comes from the cincture.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

Because there is no scapular here, this reads as a simpler cut than the layered habits elsewhere in our range, closer in spirit to the plain hooded tunics worn by friars who keep to one piece of cloth rather than two. The green is our own choice of colour rather than any order's, and nothing about the cut is presented as belonging to a named community. It suits monks, friars, oblates and lay people who wear a habit for private prayer or a simple rule of life.

04

Size and fit

We cut to fourteen graded sizes, each pairing a chest range with a finished length: S covers a 34-37 in chest, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in and 2XL 50-53 in, with robe lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure is the fifteenth option, priced the same as the L sizes, for a fit built to your own numbers rather than a size code. The habit pulls on over the head and has no front fastening.

See the stepped hem and cincture detail against our measuring guide, read how we grade cotton weights on the fabric guide, and browse the rest of the range in religious habits, or start a custom vestment order built to your own measurements.

Care

Machine washable on a cool, gentle cycle, or hand wash if you prefer.

Hang the habit to dry away from direct sun, since strong colour can fade with repeated hot drying.

Iron on a medium setting, and press the hood flat rather than folding it into a sharp crease.

FAQs

Before you order

Does this habit have a separate scapular panel?

No. This is a single hooded tunic rather than a tunic-and-scapular construction. What sits above the hem is a stepped, two-tier seam, not a separate panel worn over the torso.

Does the forest-green colour signify anything?

No particular meaning - it is a colour choice of ours rather than one drawn from any order's dress. Green does not carry a fixed liturgical meaning the way violet or white can, so we offer it simply as an alternative to the more common black, grey and brown habits.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
