Stole length guide

A stole is sized by one figure: its finished length, end to end over the shoulders. Our standard is 120 in, and any length up to 120 in costs the same.

How to measure a stole: A is one side, from the top of the neck to the end above the fringe; the finished length is A doubled

How to measure

  • A - One side: from the back of the neck, down the front to where the end should fall (knee to mid-calf). Double it for the finished length.

Details

About this stole

This Roman-style priest stole is worked in ivory satin edged in gold braid, embroidered on both panels with a jewelled gold Chi Rho medallion, a gold wreath, the letters Alpha and Omega, a small orb, and a crown in red and gold near the hem.

01

Design and symbolism

Reading down each panel: a Chi Rho medallion set with small gem accents, the ancient monogram formed from the first two Greek letters of "Christ"; a gold wreath framing it; the letters Alpha and Omega, Christ's own description of himself in Revelation as "the beginning and the end"; a small orb standing for the world; and, nearest the hem, a crown picked out in red and gold. Together the sequence points to Christ as sovereign over all things, the theme of the Feast of Christ the King.

02

Liturgical use

Ivory and gold sit within the white liturgical colour class, used for the great feasts and solemnities of the Lord. The Christ the King imagery here is written for the last Sunday of the liturgical year before Advent, though the white-and-gold ground also suits the piece to Easter and other solemn white-class Masses. It is not appropriate for Lent, Advent, or the red and green seasons.

03

Who it is for

A priest presiding at a solemn Mass on the Feast of Christ the King or another white-class solemnity, and a fitting ordination gift for a priest drawn to traditional Roman iconography and lettering.

04

Length and fit

Standard length is 120 in (305 cm), measured end to end over the shoulders and worn straight down in the presbyteral cut. Any made-to-measure length from 84 in to 120 in is priced the same as standard, and each further 5 in past 120 in, to a maximum of 160 in, adds $10. Enter your height in the box on this page for a suggested length, which you can override. Your final length, height and any notes travel with the order into the cart, checkout and confirmation.

Keep out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread from dulling, and press from the reverse only.

FAQs

Before you order

Is this stole only for the Feast of Christ the King?

It is written primarily for that feast, but the ivory and gold ground and the Chi Rho and Alpha/Omega imagery belong to the white liturgical class generally, so it also suits Easter and other solemn white-class Masses through the year.

What does the back of the stole look like?

The back neck yoke and panels are plain ivory, edged in gold braid. There is no Chi Rho, wreath or crown embroidery visible on the reverse; the pictorial design runs on the front-facing panels only.

How long should my stole be?

Enter your height in the panel above and the page works it out: roughly 100 in for a wearer up to 5 ft 4 in, 104 in to 5 ft 8 in, 108 in to 6 ft, 112 in to 6 ft 4 in, and 116 in above that. Those figures follow the usual clergy proportion of 51, 53 and 55 inches per side.

It is a guide, not a rule. Some clergy like the ends at the knee and some at mid-calf, and a stole worn over a full alb hangs differently from one worn over a cassock. If you already know the length you like, type it in and ignore the suggestion.

Does a made-to-measure length cost extra?

Up to 120 in, no. Any finished length from 84 in to 120 in (213 to 305 cm) is available at the standard price. Past 120 in we add $10 for every 5 in, so 125 in is $10 more, 130 in is $20 more, and 160 in, the longest we offer, is $80 more.

The price on the page is the price you pay. Choose Made to Measure, type the length you want, and the band updates the price before you add to cart. We confirm every made-to-measure length by email. If you need longer than 160 in, write to support@theclergycouture.com and we will quote it.

Is this cut for a priest or for a deacon?

It is made in the presbyteral cut, worn straight down over both shoulders. That is the way a priest, a pastor or a minister wears a stole, and it is what the photographs on this page show.

A deacon wears the stole across the body, from the left shoulder to the right hip. If you need it made that way, choose Made to Measure and say so in the notes, or write to support@theclergycouture.com before ordering so we can confirm it for this design.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
