Details
About this habit
A camel tunic is set off by wide ivory-cream sleeves and a dark-brown scapular front and back with a rounded lower edge, gathered at the waist with a tasselled rope cincture. It is offered in standard size codes or tailored to your own measurements.
The cut
The scapular is narrower than the shoulder width and cut with a rounded, U-shaped bottom edge rather than a straight hem, running the full length front and back in dark brown. The pointed hood is deep, lined in the same dark cloth, with a centre-back seam finished in visible topstitching. Sleeves are wide and bell-shaped, in ivory-cream against the camel body. A twisted rope cincture ties at the natural waist, its knotted ends left long. The hem falls straight to the floor with a slight break, and there are no pockets.
Cloth and finish
This is a wool habit, with a smooth, brushed, matte, felted-looking finish rather than the coarser heather texture used elsewhere in our range. Camel, ivory-cream and dark brown are each flat, solid colours, with no pattern beyond the panel construction itself.
This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.
Who wears it
The rounded scapular over a tunic, with rope cincture, loosely echoes a Franciscan cut, so we call it Franciscan in character; the three-colour treatment - camel body, cream sleeves, brown scapular - is a styling choice of ours rather than any specific order's dress. It suits monks, friars, oblates, novices and lay people who want a fuller bell-sleeve shape than the narrower sleeves used on the other habits in this range.
Size and fit
We cut to fourteen graded sizes, a chest range paired with a finished robe length: S 34-37 in, M 38-41 in, L 42-45 in, XL 46-49 in, 2XL 50-53 in, in lengths of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62 in from the nape of the neck to the hem. A fifteenth choice, Made to Measure, is priced the same as the L sizes. It has no front fastening at all; the whole garment is pulled on over the head.
See the rounded scapular hem against our other cuts in religious habits, check terms like scapular and cincture on the vestment glossary, confirm sizing on the measuring guide, or commission a custom vestment to your own measurements.
