Details

About this habit

A medium brown wool habit with a wide, rounded cowl collar over the hood and a straight-sided tan scapular running the full length front and back, tied with a tan rope cincture at the waist.

01

The cut

The cowl collar is cut wide and rounded, draping over both shoulders above the pointed hood. The tan scapular is straight-sided rather than curved at the hem, and runs the full length of the habit, front and back. A rope cincture in tan ties at the waist, its knotted ends hanging down the front. Wide bell sleeves match the brown body. The side view shows a short opening near the hem where the tunic underneath is visible, the only habit in our range cut this way, and there are no pockets.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a medium-weight wool, brushed and matte-faced, smooth to the hand and with enough structure to hold the cowl collar's shape without stiffening the rest of the garment.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the wool. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

The straight scapular, rope cincture and hooded cowl sit loosely within a Franciscan idiom, but the wide draped collar is a flourish of our own rather than a feature of any order's habit; we are not claiming this exact combination is worn by a named community. It is suited to monks, friars, oblates, novices, chaplains and lay people keeping a rule of life, and to anyone who wants a habit of this cut for prayer. The hem slit is a construction detail rather than a symbolic one, and does not affect how the habit hangs when worn.

04

Size and fit

Every habit in our range comes in fourteen graded sizes and a Made to Measure option; the price steps up with the chest size, and Made to Measure is priced the same as the L sizes. Chest sizing goes from S (34-37in) to 2XL (50-53in); each size code pairs that chest fit with a robe length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in measured from the nape of the neck to the hem, so S-56 and S-58 differ only in length. Choose Made to Measure if you would rather send your own numbers instead.

Look through religious habits and custom vestments, or read the vestment glossary if any of the terms above are unfamiliar.

Care

Air this wool habit regularly and avoid washing it often; take it for dry cleaning when it needs more than an airing.

Press with care around the cowl collar so its curve is not flattened, and keep the rope cincture away from a hot iron altogether.

FAQs

Before you order

What is the opening near the hem?

The side view shows a short opening near the hem where the tunic layer underneath is visible. It is part of the construction as photographed, and is unique to this style within our range.

How does this differ from your other scapular habits?

This scapular is straight-sided rather than rounded at the hem, and it is paired with a wide cowl collar rather than a pellegrina or a plain hood. Both together set this cut apart from the other scapular habits we sell.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
