Details

About this habit

The same capelet-and-hood cut as our black habit, made here in brown with two patch pockets added and a tan rope cincture at the waist.

01

The cut

Tunic, capelet and hood are built the same way as our black capelet habit: the capelet falls into a soft point at chest height front and back rather than sitting square, in place of a scapular, and the hood stands with some body rather than lying flat. What sets this one apart is a patch pocket at each hip, stitched under the capelet, and a tan rope cincture, knotted at the front with tasselled ends hanging below the knee, tied over the capelet's point. Sleeves are cut wide and bell-shaped to match the black habit's pattern. The hem is plain and floor-length, and the habit is pulled on over the head with nothing at the front to fasten.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a mid-weight cotton with a smooth, brushed matte face that holds its shape with little wrinkling, firmer underfoot than our coarser black habit. The colour is a solid chocolate brown from collar to hem, capelet included, broken only by the tan of the cincture rope.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

Brown cloth, a hood, a rope cincture and working pockets are all classic friar cues, so this habit is Franciscan in character; the pointed capelet, however, is a cut of our own rather than any order's traditional dress, shared with the black habit elsewhere in our range rather than drawn from historical pattern. It suits friars and monks in brown-habited communities, and lay tertiaries or oblates who want a Franciscan-style habit with pockets for daily use.

04

Size and fit

Our fourteen graded codes pair a chest range with a robe length: S at 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in, 2XL 50-53in, each offered at a length of 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62in, taken from the nape of the neck to the hem. Made to Measure, our fifteenth option, is priced the same as the L sizes. No buttons or ties sit at the front; the habit is pulled on over the head.

Compare this cut with its black counterpart in religious habits, browse custom vestments, and check sizing in our measuring guide.

Care

Wash this habit on a cool, gentle cycle and turn it inside out first to protect the pocket edges and the point of the capelet.

Line dry out of strong sun to keep the brown from fading unevenly, and hang the tan rope cincture rather than knotting it away damp.

FAQs

Before you order

How is this different from the black capelet habit?

The cut is identical: the same pointed capelet, hood and bell sleeves. This version is made in brown rather than black, and adds a patch pocket at each hip and a tan rope cincture in place of a plain black one.

Is the capelet detachable?

No. It is sewn into the neckline along with the hood as one construction, not a separate piece you put on and take off.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
