Details

About this habit

A black hooded habit cut with a shoulder capelet rather than a scapular, tied at the waist with a rope cincture.

01

The cut

The habit is built from a floor-length tunic, a capelet across the shoulders, and a hood set into the neckline. The capelet is cut to fall into a soft point at chest height at both front and back rather than lying square, and it takes the place a scapular would normally hold. The hood has some body of its own and stands slightly proud of the neck instead of lying flat. Sleeves are wide and bell-shaped, left with a plain unfinished edge. A rope cincture in matching black ties at the waist over the point of the capelet, its tasselled ends left hanging. There are no pockets. The tunic pulls on over the head, with no buttons, hooks or zips anywhere, and the hem is left long enough to pool a little on the floor.

02

Cloth and finish

This is a mid-weight cotton habit with a smooth, matte face that picks up a little sheen across the shoulders and sleeves under strong light. It falls softly rather than holding a stiff line, which is what lets the capelet drop into its point instead of sitting flat against the body. Colour is black from collar to hem, capelet and hood included, with no contrast panel anywhere on the garment.

This habit is made in either cotton or wool, and the choice is yours on this page. Cotton is lighter and breathes in warm weather; wool is heavier and holds more body in the fall of the skirt. The photographs show the cotton. The price changes as soon as you choose the cloth, and again with the size code.

03

Who wears it

A black habit with a hood is the most familiar Benedictine-style silhouette, and this one reads as Benedictine in character in that general sense. The pointed capelet is a cut of our own rather than the dress of a particular order, so no community should be assumed to wear this exact shape. It suits monks, oblates and novices who wear a habit through the day, and it suits lay people keeping a private rule of prayer who want a plain black habit for it.

04

Size and fit

The habit is cut to fourteen graded size codes, each one pairing a chest measurement with a finished length. S covers a 34-37in chest, M 38-41in, L 42-45in, XL 46-49in and 2XL 50-53in; the number that follows the letter, 54, 56, 58, 60 or 62, is the robe length in inches measured from the nape of the neck to the hem. A fifteenth option, Made to Measure, is priced the same as the L sizes and is cut to the figures you send us. The habit pulls on over the head and has no front fastening.

Care

This is a cotton habit, so it takes handling better than a fine wool one, but it should still be washed on a gentle, cool cycle and line dried out of direct sun to keep the black from fading.

Iron the tunic and capelet on the reverse if you press it, and keep the rope cincture untangled by hanging it rather than balling it up in a drawer.

FAQs

Before you order

Is the capelet the same thing as a scapular?

No. A scapular is a straight panel of cloth over the shoulders, front and back. This habit is cut with a capelet instead, which flares out from the shoulders and comes to a soft point at chest height rather than hanging straight.

Is the hood sewn to the habit or separate?

The hood is attached, set into the neckline as part of the one garment. It has enough body to stand a little at the crown rather than lying completely flat when it is down.

How do I choose my size code?

Each code pairs a chest range with a robe length. The letter is the chest: S is 34-37 in, M is 38-41 in, L is 42-45 in, XL is 46-49 in, 2XL is 50-53 in. The number is the finished robe length in inches, measured from the nape of the neck to the hem.

So a man with a 40 in chest at 5 ft 11 in takes M-58. Open the size guide on this page and read down to the row where your chest and height meet. If you are between two lengths, the longer one gives a fuller hem and the shorter one clears the floor more easily.

What if none of the size codes fits me?

Choose Made to Measure. The measurement fields appear as soon as you select it, and there is no separate made-to-measure charge: it is priced at the same step as the L sizes, in whichever cloth you choose.

It is the right choice if your chest and height fall in different rows, if you are outside the ranges given, if you want a particular hem length, or if you want the sleeves cut narrower or fuller than standard. We read every made-to-measure order and write to you if a figure looks unlikely.

How is the habit worn?

It goes on over the head and falls loose over whatever is worn underneath, so it needs no fastening at the front. The cincture ties at the waist and gathers the fullness; the hood sits back on the shoulders and is drawn up when wanted.

Where a habit has a scapular, that is the straight panel worn over the tunic, hanging front and back, and it goes on after the tunic and before the cincture.

How should the stole be cared for?

We recommend professional dry cleaning for embroidered vestments. Store the stole flat or loosely rolled rather than folded, so no crease forms across the embroidery, and keep it out of direct sunlight to protect the gold thread. The Journal's vestment care guide covers pressing, storage and stain removal in full.
